Title: The Challenger (Contender #2)
Author: Taran Matharu
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
CAWPILE: 10.00 (5/5)
My highest rated book so far this year, I’ve been pondering how to put my feelings about it into words, without spoiling it for those who’ve yet to read it. This is a difficult feat, as I have so much I want to say about it so I will try and say as much as I can without giving away too much.
I loved meeting the characters again, and seeing them develop further over the course of the story. I also enjoyed the romance that gradually develops between two of the central characters, and liked the fact it was quite subtly written into the novel and not a central theme. Something else I liked about the book, is the way it retained the main action elements of the first book but also upped the stakes; didn’t make things any easier for the characters but added new elements as well. I thought the plot was quite strong and actually logical in a way (though I won’t go into why because…spoilers for people who haven’t read it yet!), and also thought that the novel as a whole had a lot of logic throughout, i.e. the situations the characters find themselves in, what they do, the way things occur etc.
As a whole I just absolutely loved this book – if you haven’t read the first one I would highly recommend you do and then read this, if you’re a fan of science fiction/fantasy. You can find my review of The Chosen (Contender #1) here.
You have wings. Believe in them and yourself, and you will fly.
