I want to give a huge thank you to Canongate Publishing for sending me a copy of this.
Yet another book I’ve been unable to organise my many thoughts over until now, but I wanted to post a review for it anyway, and here it is :D.
*Effie Truelove has discovered how to travel through magical books into the Otherworld. However her classmate, Maximilian Underwood, is more interested in the dark and prohibited Underworld, which holds a number of untold dangers.
When both Effie and Maximilian disappear unexpectedly their friends Wolf, Raven (a witch) and Lexy have know idea where – or who – to turn to for help, and Raven discovers through her horse Echo is in grave danger, and they’re running out of time. To make matters worse Raven’s mother, author Laurel Wilde, is caught up in a plot with the merciless Albion Freake who’ll stop at nothing to gain absolute power.
Where are Effie and Maximilian, are their disappearances connected and can Freake’s deadly plan be stopped?*
The blurb of the sequel to the first in Scarlett Thomas’s Worldquake series alone was enough to intrigue me and pull me in, and then I was hooked after the first page.
I loved going back into the Otherworld with Effie and her cousins again, and exploring the Underworld with Maximilian was interesting, though it was also a little creepy….some parts of it actually scared me a little, while others just confused me and made me go “wha-a-a-at?”
I am definitely not fan of Albion Freake and others on the bad side of this story, though I do like Wolf a lot….though I think I may like Raven a little more hehe.
I loved this book the whole way through, and can’t wait for the next installment.
Stay true to yourself, and never let anyone or anything deter you from the course you wish to take.
Kath xoxo
